Halloween is one of the most exciting weeks in any childcare program — and one of the trickiest when it comes to food. Kids are expecting treats, parents are sending in candy, and you still need to serve snacks that meet CACFP meal pattern requirements.
The good news? CACFP-creditable snacks can be just as fun as anything store-bought. All it takes is a little creativity with foods you’re probably already serving.
Here are 8 Halloween snack pairings that are spooky, kid-approved, and fully creditable under the CACFP snack meal pattern.
👻 Quick Refresher: What Counts as a CACFP Snack?
A creditable CACFP snack requires two of the five meal components:
- Milk
- Meat / Meat Alternate
- Grains
- Fruits
- Vegetables
Each component must meet the minimum serving size for the age group you serve. For the full snack meal pattern table, see the USDA CACFP Meal Patterns.
Remember: Grain-based desserts — cookies, granola bars, cereal bars, and similar items — do not credit as a grain component in the CACFP, even if they contain whole grains.

- ✅Check your labels. Crackers, pretzels, graham crackers, and cereals must be whole grain-rich to credit as a grain component.
- 🚫Grain-based desserts don’t count. Cookies, brownies, granola bars, and cereal bars do not credit — even with a Halloween shape.
- 🍬Candy is not creditable. It never meets a CACFP component requirement. If parents send in candy, it can’t replace or be part of a claimed snack.
- 🎨Decorative elements aren’t credited. Mini marshmallows, chocolate chips used as “eyes,” and similar items are decorative — they don’t count toward the meal pattern.
- 📏Serve the right portions. Every component must meet the minimum serving size for the age group. Check the CACFP meal pattern table.
